Holiday Series: Spiced Grapefruit Juice
My mother and grandmother (I call her Janny) have very strong feelings about what to do when you're sick, or rather, what to do in the winter when there's a greater risk of becoming sick.
Always wear socks and slippers in the house.
Gargle salt water when you feel a sore throat coming on.
Eat nutritious and balanced meals.
But their most popular word during the winter months is: citrus.
Eat orange slices. Halve a grapefruit and spoon out its sections. Make fresh juice in the morning.
My mom even gave me a little serrated knife whose particular use is to cut out the sections of a citrus fruit (best stocking stuffer ever).
Though I've lately been eating somewhere between five and eight little cutie oranges every day (I'm pregnant?), my favorite member of the citrus family is the grapefruit. After searching long and hard for a sugarless yet vitamin-C-rich warm drink for my mornings, I finally found the perfect concoction. No bright-eyed tip is needed today, my friends. This warm drink is sweetened with a little bit of honey and amped up with my favorite spices, so it's nutritious enough to sip along with your breakfast but also flavorful enough to satisfy your taste buds at any time of a winter day.
Day 3: Spiced Grapefruit Juice
Inspired by so good and tasty
juice from two grapefruits OR two mugfuls of your favorite grapefruit juice (I choose Simply Grapefruit)
honey, to taste (I used about two tablespoons to keep some tartness)
a dash of ground nutmeg
a pinch of whole cloves
a few allspice berries
one cinnamon stick
Combine ingredients in a small saucepan. Heat on medium low until juice reaches a simmer but does not boil. Remove from heat. Ladle into two mugs and sip in the goodness.
